Kyle Cross was born on March 14, 1976, in Portland, Oregon, to Denise Cross, a registered nurse, and Richard “Rick” Cross, a construction foreman. Before settling into construction work, Rick had once been a promising college quarterback with dreams of going pro, but an injury abruptly ended his future in the sport. Though he rarely spoke about it, the disappointment lingered, shaping the way he approached both life and fatherhood.
Growing up, Kyle experienced a childhood marked by both distance and glimpses of connection. His father was often emotionally withdrawn, yet there were moments, small but meaningful, that stayed with him. It was not until Kyle reached high school and began playing football himself that their relationship started to shift. On the field, Kyle excelled, and for the first time, he felt he had his father’s attention. That attention, however, came with a condition. Affirmation followed performance. When Kyle succeeded, his father was present. When he did not, the silence returned.
At school, Kyle thrived. He was well known, well liked, and quickly became one of the most popular students on campus. With success came attention, and with attention came temptation. Relationships, parties, and the pressures of expectation surrounded him, and while he was drawn into that world, there were lines he never crossed. His mother’s steady influence remained a quiet anchor in his life, guiding his decisions even when he did not fully recognize it at the time.
Even so, the deeper emptiness never left. Beneath the surface of popularity and achievement, Kyle found himself searching for something more, something that football, relationships, and recognition could not provide. Music became the place where those unspoken struggles found expression long before he understood what they meant.
His talent on the field eventually earned him a football scholarship to college, something that filled his father with pride and seemed, on the surface, like the fulfillment of everything he had been working toward. College, however, did not unfold the way Kyle expected. At first, it brought bigger crowds, higher expectations, and a chance to prove himself on a larger stage. Football dominated his schedule and, for a time, continued to define his sense of identity.
It was during this season that Kyle met Aaron Blake. What began as a simple connection through music quickly grew into something deeper. The two spent hours jamming, talking, and sharing life, conversations that went far beyond chords and melodies into questions Kyle had never seriously considered. Aaron’s faith was not forced or performative. It was steady, genuine, and lived out in a way that caught Kyle off guard.
questions thatAs time went on, however, the lack of structure and the absence of his father’s constant expectations began to take their toll. When Kyle suffered an injury that sidelined him for several weeks, it left him once again facing disappointment and silence from his father. Without the identity he had built around football, everything began to unravel. Overwhelmed by the pressure, the uncertainty, and the weight of unmet expectations, his life began to spiral.
The parties grew louder, the nights grew longer, and the emptiness he had managed to ignore for years became impossible to silence. He found it harder to hold on to the values his mother had instilled in him and crossed lines he never thought he would. Guilt and shame followed, along with a growing sense of confusion about who he was and where he was going. Even as his injury healed, deeper questions remained. He began to wonder whether he could ever regain the sense of purpose he once had, or whether he had lost it entirely.
For a time, Kyle kept Aaron’s faith at a distance. He respected it and even admired it, but it did not fit into the life he was living, and at times it only deepened his sense of guilt. Still, something about those conversations stayed with him. They lingered in quiet moments, in the spaces between noise, much like his music always had. When Aaron eventually invited him to a Campus Crusade meeting, Kyle almost declined. It was not his world, and part of him resisted stepping into something that might challenge everything he thought he knew. Yet something, whether curiosity or something deeper, led him to say yes.
That decision changed everything. For the first time, Kyle heard the gospel not as a distant idea but as something personal. It was not about rules or religion, but about relationship. It was about a God who did not wait for people to get their lives together but who pursued them right where they were. For someone who had spent his life trying to earn approval on the field, at home, and in relationships, that truth struck deeply.
The emptiness he had carried for so long finally made sense, and more than that, it was no longer permanent. Kyle gave his life to Christ that night, not out of pressure, but from a quiet and undeniable realization that what he had been searching for had finally found him. The change was not instant perfection, but it was real. His priorities began to shift, and the things that had once defined him began to lose their hold. In their place came something steadier and far more meaningful.
Not long after, Kyle met Elena. Where Aaron had introduced him to truth, Elena helped him learn how to live it. Her encouragement, patience, and grounded faith became a stabilizing force during a season of change, and through her influence, Kyle began to grow not just in belief, but in character. Music began to change as well. The songs he wrote were no longer just expressions of frustration or confusion but reflections of grace, redemption, and truth. What had once been an outlet became a calling.
By their final year of college in 1998, that calling began to take shape. What started as late-night jam sessions between friends grew into something more intentional as others joined them with the same heart for faith and music. It was during this season that the foundation of a band was laid, one that would soon become known as Chasing Outcasts.
The name itself came from Kyle’s own story. Once convinced he was an outcast, someone beyond God’s reach, he came to understand that God had been pursuing him all along. Now, as the voice of the band, Kyle carries that truth into every song and every stage, reaching those who feel forgotten and reminding them that no one is ever too far gone to be found.
